First For Southside: PittCo Proposed Data Center Would Be Huge, Planning Member Calls It "Our Casino"
“This is our casino. It’s our time to grow." - That’s what a Pittsylvania County Planning Commission member said about a proposed data center that would be located in the Mount Hill Community, close to the Danville airport and not far from the nasty awful smelling First Piedmont landfill, so it’s hard to imagine much more housing ever going into the land that the data center would be built on.
The potential tax revenue has county officials and elected officials excited.
Data centers in other counties in Virginia bring in massive tax revenue and the county just had to raise property tax collections this year for its budget. One just approved in Hanover County is expected to generate $40 million in year in tax revenue. Much of the tax revenue is generated from the taxation of computers and equipment inside the data centers.
It’s the big story this week and was the topic of a Pittsylvania County rezoning hearing Tuesday night.
